Last month Newbury looked to spur on new residential development with the elimination of permit fees and first year’s taxes.
Now, council is looking to see what could be done for the business sector with the formation of an Economic Development Committee.
Headed up by councillor Monte McNaughton, the committee will also include members of the business community as well as local citizens.
“The way I look at it, the building fee and tax thing was to push the residential side of things,” says McNaughton. “Now this is for the business side of things.”
The committee plans to meet about 10 times over the next three months before returning to council with their suggestions in September.
One such idea, said McNaughton, would be the possibility of getting high-speed Internet not just for the businesses, but for the hospital as well.
“We’re (Newbury) very unique in the fact that we didn’t amalgamate. And we want to stay unique in our ideas regarding our businesses. The idea is to generate ideas and see which ones we could put into action.”
